2021 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo @ Top Speed

Overview.

Porsche is known to deliver breathtaking performance in style and now, like other big automakers, Porsche is making big moves toward performance EVS. The Taycan is currently the brand’s only offering, and now it can be had in both sedan and wagon form. Today, we will discuss the latter, which is the Taycan Cross Turismo. The 2022 model brings some necessary feature additions like the inclusion of Android Auto, a remote-parking feature, a better infotainment system with enhanced voice recognition, and a better thermal dissipation system. The updated thermal dissipation system will allow optimized and fast charging. With the starting price of $93,700 for the base trim, it will compete with the Audi e-Tron, Tesla Model X, and Jaguar I-PACE.

Exterior Designs and Dimensions.

The Taycan looks and feels like Porsche, but the most striking details are found on the headlight styling where the company skipped its regular oval-shaped design and went for something a little more aggressive. The four-point LED DRLs with LED headlights in the sleekest attire make the front-end look sharp and unique. The front also has the air vents placed similarly to the 911s and brake cooling vents beside the headlight curves enhance the looks but helps in aerodynamics too.

From the sides, it is noticeable how the Cross Turismo is different from the Sedan. The wagon-styled rear, 0.78 inches more height, and a flatter roofline compared to the sloping one on the sedan make it a more practical offering among the two. Also, you can take the Cross Turismo for some mild off-roading if you want to test its limit and it won’t disappoint you. The rear has the typical Porsche-styled sleek rear LED brake lights with the Porsche badging and a roof spoiler at the top. As standard, the Taycan Cross Turismo sits on a set of 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in summer performance tires.

EVs tend to weigh a bit more than their gas-powered counterparts because of the lithium-ion batteries and, no doubt, the new Taycan Cross Turismo follows suit. It weighs 5,029 pounds and is 195.8 inches long with a height of 55.5 inches and 77.4 inches wide. The wheelbase is the same as the Sedan at 114.2 inches long.

Interior: Features and Practicality.

Porsche interiors are always one of the best in terms of quality and comfort. The 2022 Taycan Cross Turismo will be no different where you will forget about its aggressive nature and start appreciating how the cabin is a good place to be in. The dashboard looks and feels great with all the big screens up front. The dash, door trims, steering wheel, and center console have faux leather inserts to offer you a premium feel. The huge 16.8-inch curved instrument panel offers tons of customizability and can be controlled through the integrated control buttons on the steering wheel. The center console sports another 8.4-inch
screen with touch sensitivity for controlling the HVAC system. The main 10.3-inch touchscreen display sits in the middle and now has an improved operating system.

The bucket seats in the front are comfortable and sporty at the same time with enough bolstering. Power adjustability and multi-level heating come as standard for the front but extending the latter function for the rear will cost you extra. The rear seats are leather-covered, so the comfort is there. Porsche does not disclose their vehicles’ interior dimensions but given the flat roof of the Cross Turismo, there is an increase in the front and rear headroom by 0.35 inches and 3.62 inches, respectively.
As this is a family hauler, the practicality is increased by up to 15.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity at the back of the rear seats. There’s the 2.9 cubic feet capacity under the hood for your duffels and other small luggage. The interior standout features are as follows:

  • 14-way power-adjustable front seats with multi-level heating options.
  • Leather seats and interior trims.
  • Leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel.
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control.
  • 16.8-inch curved instrument panel.
  • Rear heated seats.
  • 8.4-inch touchscreen display for HVAC controls.

As for the infotainment system, Porsche Connect comes loaded with Android Auto, improved voice recognition, and Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity. There are three infotainment screens: the main 10.3-inch touchscreen display sitting in the middle offers loads of customizations and displays good color and the interface is 50/50 in terms of intuitiveness. The huge 16.8-inch driver information screen can display navigation and your best playlists blasting through the 14-speaker Bose system, which is not available as standard. A few of the infotainment system features available are:

  • 10.3-inch touchscreen display.
  • Porsche Connect with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
  • SiriusXM.
  • Navigation system.
  • Voice recognition.
  • Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity.
  • 14-speaker Bose premium speakers. (Optional)

Powertrain, Performance, Handling, and Braking.

Sharing the same chassis and other components from its sedan sibling, the Cross Turismo is powered by two permanent-magnet synchronous motors and comes with all-wheel drive. Powering the electric motors is a 93.4 kWh battery pack which comes as standard with the Cross Turismo. Porsche has offered a two-speed automated manual transmission for an EV unlike the competition choosing a direct drive system. The power figures range between 375 to a whopping 750 horsepower and 368 to a thrashing 774 pound-feet of torque with launch control turned on.

The base 4 trim has the least power figures with 375 horses that go up to 469 horses with Overboost Power. In terms of torque, it produces 368 pound-feet.
Porsche claims that the base trim does clock 60 miles an hour on the beautiful instrument panel in 4.8 seconds. Car And Driver claims that the same would complete a quarter-mile from standstill in 12.7 seconds. The Turbo S does the fastest 0-60 miles an hour in just 2.7 seconds which is super quick.

The new 2022 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo gets a lot of handling enhancements over the outgoing model year as standard to make it friendly on almost every kind of road. The Cross Turismo is just a Porsche with uncompromised handling. The addition of adaptive air suspension with equal power distribution through all four wheels and an improved steering feel has resulted in better dynamics. Porsche has offered three driving modes Comfort, Sport, and Range which will affect the throttle response, braking input, suspension, and steering capabilities according to your needs.
The brakes are smaller on the base compared to the far-bigger ceramic brakes found on the Turbo S which will not only come to a halt faster in case of emergency but also help when going around a race-track.

Overall Range and Charging.

Generating over 700 horsepower through the 93.4 kWh battery pack is not ideal for a decent overall range. Being the least powerful among the bunch the base trim delivers the best with 227 miles and the most powerful trim gets an EPA
rating of only 202 miles. As for charging, the 800-volt battery pack takes about 10.5 hours to fully charge from 5-100 percent via a 9.6 kW AC home charger bundled with the Taycan. However, a 270 kW charging station will allow the battery to charge up to 80 percent in 22.5 minutes which is one of the leading fast-charging techs and is even better than the EV giant Tesla.

Safety Features.

Porsche has made available a few additional safety features to the 2022 Taycan Cross Turismo apart from the ones already there. The brand has always been caring about its customers and is extremely reliable. We doubt that the new 2022 Cross Turismo will go to the U.S. federal agencies for vigorous crash tests but luxury brands like Porsche tend to skip them as they are not required. Anyway, jot down the important safety features available:

  • Lane departure warning.
  • Forward collision warning.
  • Cruise control.
  • Pre-collision safety system.
  • Post-collision safety system.
  • Automated emergency braking.
  • Lane-keeping assist.
  • Traffic sign recognition.

Conclusion.

There’s no doubt that the 2022 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is a great option but for a specific group of audience. The performance and overall feature list are impressive and very Porsche-ish. The major concern with it would be the lower average range compared to the likes of Tesla Model X, Audi e-Tron, and Jaguar I-PACE. Also, the price tag is very heavy but Porsche is offering up to three years of free charging from Electrify America which is not the case with Tesla and other companies.
