2022 Chevy Suburban, Tahoe Get New Tech, Wider Availability of Big V8 | Kelley Blue Book

For the 2022 model year, GM’s biggest SUVs are getting an upgrade. Both the Chevy Suburban and Tahoe were redesigned for 2021, so they don’t need much of an update to stay among the best choices for those in need of serious size and towing capability. But Chevy has added more cabin tech and brought powerful engine options to more buyers.

Chevrolet retains the bare bones, fleet-centered LS models of both SUVs with little change.

New Cabin Tech

But most private buyers opt for the LT model or a higher trim. Those gain a new 12.3-inch digital screen in place of the old analog instrument cluster. It allows drivers to customize the information they want displayed.

Google Built-In adds Google Assistant, Maps, and Play to the infotainment screen. This lets drivers use voice commands to control the navigation and climate settings, plus send and receive text messages (Google Assistant will read them aloud). Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both included.

Active safety features standard across all trims now include front and rear park assist and lane-keeping assist with lane-departure warning. Buckle to Drive, which won’t allow the car out of Park until both the driver and front passenger have buckled their seatbelts, is newly standard as well.

Up to 13 onboard cameras allow for a new “see-through trailer” view for towing. It lets the driver see rear traffic even when a compatible trailer is attached.

6.2-Liter V8 on More Trims

Neither SUV gets a new engine, but both are making their strongest engine available to more buyers. Last year, the standard 5.3-liter V8, with its 355-horsepower, was found on all but the top trim level. The most expensive, the High Country model, carried a more powerful, 420-horsepower, 6.2-liter V8.

This year, the 6.2 is available as an option on the RST, Z71, and Premier trims. It remains standard in the High Country. A 6-cylinder turbodiesel is still optional on all models except the Z71.

An electronic limited-slip differential is available on that off-road-focused Z71 for added grip. It’s still active in the 4-wheel-drive system’s low setting.
