The idea behind Hyundai’s Genesis luxury division is to offer all the sumptuous extravagance buyers have come to expect from luxury cars but at a lower price. It results in some compelling values. The G80 large sedan, for example, takes aim at the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, and Audi A6 with bold styling, rear-wheel-drive performance, and a starting price none of them can approach.
For the 2022 model year, Genesis is staying the course. The G80 keeps its starting price under $50,000, with an MSRP of just $49,045. The sticker reflects an $845 increase over the 2021 base price.
300 Horsepower and 3 Years of Complimentary Maintenance
That figure gets you a 300-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. A long (for the price) list of luxury features includes an enormous 14.5-inch infotainment screen, 12-way power-adjustable front seats, leatherette upholstery, and the Highway Driving Assist system, which keeps the car centered in its lane at highway speeds while adjusting speed to stay a safe distance from the car ahead.
It also comes with complimentary scheduled maintenance with at-home pickup for the first 3 years or 36,000 miles.
New Sport Model with All-Wheel Steering
Spending $64,495 puts you in the new-for-2022 3.5T AWD Sport trim. That comes with standard all-wheel drive and a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 making 375 horsepower. It also adds all-wheel steering, a sport-tuned adaptive suspension system, more supportive sport seats, and a unique 3-spoke steering wheel. Dark chrome trim sets it apart visually.
Price Peaks Below Rivals
Even fully decked out in Genesis G80 3.5T AWD Sport Prestige trim with performance tires, the G80 will still cost less than $72,000. That’s comfortably in luxury car price territory but well below what you’d pay for a similarly equipped BMW 5 Series.
There will also be an electric version of the G80. Genesis hasn’t released pricing for that model.
Legacy and prestige are the currency of the luxury car world. Genesis knows that it remains too new to attract shoppers with those traits. So, it counters with exceptional value for the price. The 2022 G80 looks like another very solid value in a segment where values are hard to find.
