Niro EV vs. Leaf Plus: Range vs. Budget

Kia Niro EV

Kia’s small crossover is available as a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, and now as an EV as well. With nearly 240 miles of range, the 2022 Kia Niro EV is an impressive little crossover, with plenty of space for passengers and cargo. Good low-end torque makes it fairly quick, but due to the extra weight of the batteries, its handling is not quite as spry as its hybrid brother. All Niro EVs are front-wheel drive only.

Inside, the 2022 Niro EV is comfortable and spacious, although considering its nearly $40,000 price tag, we would expect the materials to be a bit nicer and the design a bit less plain. The passenger room is good in the rear, and there are 53 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats folded.

Standard equipment includes remote start, automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a combination of cloth and synthetic leather upholstery. There are also 60/40 split-folding rear seats, wireless phone charging, and a 10.25-inch screen with navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a standard Harmon Kardon premium audio system.

Safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and Kia’s Highway Driving Assist semi-autonomous driving system.

The Premium trim adds a sunroof, faux leather throughout, and ventilated front seats. While the 2022 Kia Niro EV is on the pricier side, it qualifies for a federal tax credit. The Niro EV is also only available in 12 states, while the plug-in hybrid is for sale in all 50.

Nissan Leaf Plus

A veteran among electric cars, the Nissan Leaf has been around for more than a decade, with the 2022 Leaf Plus representing the little EV’s second generation. The maximum range of 236 miles is nearly that of the Niro’s and exceeds the 149 miles of the standard Leaf, which starts at $27,400. All 2022 Leafs are eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit for even more savings.

Handling is good, about as expected from an EV, and the Leaf can be driven using a single pedal only, if desired. Press the accelerator pedal to go and lift off to slow down or stop. There is still a brake pedal for traditional braking, too.

The interior is clean and simple, although there’s a fair amount of plastic. Higher trims get features such as leather and an upgraded audio system. A hatchback, the Leaf offers 23.6 cubic feet of cargo space or 30 cubes with the rear seats folded. There’s good space in front, and the rear legroom is decent.

Standard equipment includes keyless start, automatic climate control, and an infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration. On the safety front, all Leaf models come with Nissan’s Safety Shield 360. This includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, automatic high beams, and a rear door alert.

Higher trims get features such as a 360-degree camera system; a Bose 7-speaker audio system; and ProPilot Assist, Nissan’s sophisticated adaptive cruise control.

Both qualify for the federal $7,500 tax credit; simple interiors; front-wheel drive only.

2022 Kia Niro EV Advantages

Power; range; better MPGe; cargo space; long battery warranty.

2022 Nissan Leaf Plus Advantages

Lower price; available in all 50 states.

Which One is Right for Me?

While the price of entry is fairly high, the 2022 Kia Niro EV has lots of space for passengers and cargo and about 13 miles more range than the Leaf Plus, making it better all-round.

The 2022 Nissan Leaf Plus has a much better range than the standard Leaf, but it costs about $5,000 more. Its relatively low price makes it a great entry into EV ownership.
