2022 Kia Seltos vs. 2022 Chevrolet Trax Comparison | Kelley Blue Book

The Kia Seltos and the Chevrolet Trax are two subcompact SUVs that are sized right for life in the city. Here’s how they compare.

2022 Kia Seltos

2022 Kia Seltos Starting Price: $22,490 | Price yours or View listings near you

Above Average: Optional turbo engine; all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard on all but one trim; standard active-safety features; roomy interior; great warranty.

Below Average: 2.0-liter engine’s CVT.

Consensus: The 2022 Kia Seltos slots between the Soul and the Sportage in the Kia lineup; we like the turbo engine; all but one trim come standard with AWD; locking center differential gives these models some off-road capability.

2022 Chevrolet Trax

Above Average: Available AWD; easy to park; comfortable driving position.

Consensus: The 2022 Chevrolet Trax is one of the older vehicles in this segment. The engine is improved this year, but the model lacks some of the driver-assist systems that are standard on most of its rivals.

Seltos vs. Trax: Urban Runabouts

Kia Seltos

The 2022 Kia Seltos was introduced last year and sits between the Soul and the Sportage. Unlike the Soul (which is front-wheel drive (FWD) only), the Seltos comes standard with AWD on all but the S trim (where it’s optional).

A 2.0-liter base engine paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) makes a modest 146 horsepower, but a zippy 175-hp turbo 1.6-liter with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic is available in the Nightfall Edition and the SX. EPA-combined estimates with the 2.0-liter are 31 mpg (FWD) and 29 mpg (AWD). The turbo with AWD is 27 mpg.

The Kia’s squared-off shape makes for a roomy cabin with an adult-sized rear seat and 26.6 cubic feet of luggage space that expands to 62.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The ride and handling are agreeable if not particularly sporty.

A 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation is on all but the base car, which gets an 8-inch unit. All have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and upper trims get wireless charging.

Forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, and a driver-attention monitor are standard on all trims. The EX, Nightfall Edition, and SX additionally get blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Chevrolet Trax

The Trax was Chevrolet’s first subcompact SUV, but now Chevy also offers the newer, roomier, and better-equipped Trailblazer, yet the Trax is still around. Sold in just two trim levels, LS and LT, the Trax is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that makes a bit more power this year: 155 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque.

Trax comes with a 6-speed automatic to handle the shifting, which makes for less engine droning than you’d get with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (AWD) are available. Fuel economy is somewhat disappointing with EPA-combined estimates of 27 mpg (FWD) and 26 mpg (AWD).

The front seat offers a raised driving position and good outward visibility. Rear-seat accommodations are tight, and the cargo hold is on the small side. There’s 18.7 cubic feet of luggage space behind the rear seat and 48.4 with the rear seatbacks folded. (The Trailblazer is better in both measures and has more passenger space, too.) The flat-folding front seatback that provided an extra measure of versatility for carrying long items has been dropped.

An easy-to-use 7-inch touchscreen includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and available Wi-Fi. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the LT only, while lane-keeping assist and forward-collision warning are not available—a glaring omission. The LT can be dressed up with the Midnight Edition, Sport Edition, or Redline Edition styling packages.

Similarities

Base engine horsepower, available AWD.

2022 Kia Seltos Advantages

Turbo engine’s acceleration; long warranty; larger touchscreens.

2022 Chevrolet Trax Advantages

Standard 6-speed automatic; NHTSA 5 star safety rating.

Which One Is Right for Me?

The 2022 Kia Seltos offers fresh styling, plenty of room, and the option of a more powerful turbo engine. It also boasts a long warranty.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trax comes with an improved powertrain and is easy to park, but shows its age in its lack of high-tech features.
