Stinger vs. IS: Sport Sedan Showdown

Kia Stinger

The new 2022 Kia Stinger has readjusted its feature set, offering more value for less money. Still, frugal buyers searching for a budget-priced sports sedan should be prepared for how quickly the price may ramp up.

For 2022, there is a more potent base engine and refined exterior looks. In addition to the Stinger’s appearance and overall functionality, it touts a cargo-hauling bonus via the liftback rear opening.

The new Stinger is powered by a base 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. Performance enthusiasts can select the 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 powering the Stinger GT1, GT2, and Scorpion. This twin-turbo engine receives an additional 3 horses this year, now making 368 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque.

Both engines are matched to an 8-speed automatic transmission with standard rear- or all-wheel drive for an additional $2,200. A maxed-out 2022 Kia Stinger GT2, which includes standard all-wheel drive, prices just below $56,000.

Among the driver assists the Stinger offers are forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian/cyclist detection, and blind-spot monitoring. Also included are rear cross-traffic collision avoidance, rear parking sensors, and navigation-based adaptive cruise control.

The Lexus IS is available in three basic models. First up is the rear-wheel-drive IS 300. The IS 300 AWD is next, followed by the IS 350, which is available in rear- or AWD and standard or F Sport trim. Throughout the lineup, the major difference is in the engine and the drivetrain packaging.

Power for the Lexus IS 300 comes from a base 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 making 241 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. It is matched to an 8-speed automatic transmission with standard rear-wheel drive. The IS 300 AWD employs a 3.5-liter V6 producing 260 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. The Lexus IS 300 comes with a standard 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration. NuLuxe synthetic leather covers the seating and 18-inch wheels replace the previous 17-inch alloys. Factory leather is not an option.
