All-new for 2022, the Mitsubishi Outlander is ready to take on compact SUVs like the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan. Unusual for the segment, 3-row seating is available in both. Here’s how they compare.
2022 Mitsubishi Outlander
Above Average: Seating for seven; contemporary looks; plug-in hybrid option; great powertrain warranty.
Below Average: Plug-in hybrid variant is essentially a carryover of the previous generation; no wireless Android Auto; tiny third row; full safety features only available on higher trims.
Consensus: Longer and wider, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is completely redesigned for 2022, with more space for passengers in its three rows. The third row is still best only for children, however.
2022 Volkswagen Tiguan
Above Average: Handsome updated styling; spacious interior; available third-row seat.
Below Average: Third row limited to FWD models; just one engine choice; mediocre fuel economy.
Consensus: The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan drives well and has a roomy interior, although its third-row seat is a bit of a stretch. Its exterior benefits from a refresh.
Outlander vs. Tiguan: Compact Size, Big Value
Having skipped the 2021 model year except for the plug-in hybrid, which carries over as a ’22 model, the Mitsubishi Outlander comes roaring back completely redesigned from the ground up for 2022. The plug-in hybrid version of this new model is expected to follow in a year or so.
We’re happy to say that the Outlander shows improvement all around, with a bigger footprint translating to more space for cargo and passengers, and a contemporary, modern look inside and out.
A 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine sends power via a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to the front wheels or optionally all four. Its 181 horsepower may not seem like much, but it moves the Outlander along and earns up to 31 mpg on the highway. We also don’t dislike the CVT, which in Sport mode actually mimics shifting via paddles. There’s also a drive-mode selector so the Outlander can be tuned for conditions such as gravel, snow, and mud.
Inside, the look is modern and comfortable, with such touches as soft padding on the instrument panel and illuminated interior door handles. The base ES trim gets a cloth interior and an 8-inch touchscreen, plus safety features including a blind-spot monitor and automatic emergency braking.
Upper trims get such amenities as a suede-trimmed interior, a multiview camera, navigation, and more safety features. The top SEL trim is downright luxurious, with full leather seating, heated rear seats, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel.
The Volkswagen Tiguan has been revised for 2022 but remains one of the larger entrants in its class and one of the few to offer a third-row seat. That back bench is small, however, and when in use it eats up most of the cargo space. The 3-row Tiguan is also only available with front-wheel drive.
As a 2-row SUV, the Tiguan provides plenty of passenger room and luggage space. A turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque is the sole engine, mated to a responsive 8-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy trails the segment leaders at 26 mpg with FWD and 24 to 25 mpg with AWD.
The 2022 Tiguan is offered in S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line trim levels. Only the top trim comes standard with all-wheel drive; it’s optional on the others. The S includes forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, heated seats, and third-row seating.
The SE adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot intervention (all optional on the S). It also upgrades to an 8-inch infotainment display with wireless smartphone mirroring and adds wireless charging, power driver’s seat, and power liftgate, among other features.
The SE R-Line Black features black 19-inch wheels and exterior accents as well as a panoramic sunroof, parking sensors, and ambient lighting. The SEL R-Line gets leather, ventilated front seats, and a larger digital instrumentation display.
Standard 4-cylinder drivetrains; fuel economy; optional all-wheel drive; ability to seat up to seven.

2022 Volkswagen Tiguan Advantages
