Frontier vs. Colorado: Midsize Matchup

Nissan Frontier

The Frontier is all-new except for its powertrain and boxed ladder-frame chassis. Styled in California, it looks as if it’s been chiseled from a single block. Nissan wanted the new Frontier to be a modern interpretation of the original Hardbody pickup without being overtly retro.

While the new Frontier has the same 126- and 140-inch wheelbases as before, the overall length is up by about 4.5 inches because of the truck’s more prominent nose. No worries, though: Despite this small increase in length, the Frontier still fits with ease in most garages.

King Cab and Crew Cab models are available. A 6-foot bed is standard on the King Cab; a 5-footer comes on the Crew Cab. A 6-foot bed, though, can be ordered on the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab SV. As before, Frontier 4×2 and 4×4 models are available, the latter equipped with a shift-on-the-fly 2-speed transfer case. Max towing is 6,720 pounds, and trailer sway control is standard.

The 2022 Nissan Frontier’s 3.8-liter V6 (310 hp and 281 lb.-ft. of torque) gets best-in-class power. It mates to a 9-speed automatic transmission that is a big improvement over the previous 5-speed version.

This powertrain combination makes the Frontier extremely capable. Whether on- or off-road, the Frontier has the gumption to get you out of a sticky situation. Gas mileage estimates remain competitive among the midsize truck segment. The 4×2 models see 18 city/24 highway with a combined 20 mpg estimate. You take a slight hit with the 4×4 model. Numbers come in at 17 city/22 highway and combined 19 mpg.

Chevrolet Colorado

The 2022 Chevrolet Colorado is a top choice in the competitive midsize pickup truck segment. One of the most well-rounded options in this segment with strong capabilities, the Colorado boasts a fairly roomy interior in the crew cab models and road-friendly driving comfort. One area where it’s lacking is modern driver-assistance tech features.

The Chevrolet Colorado is a truck that drives so nicely that it almost feels like a crossover. It doesn’t have the bouncy ride sometimes associated with this class, and the noise and vibration levels are low. Even the steering is precise and nicely weighted.

The base engine is an inline-4 that’s good on gas while producing 200 horsepower. Upgrading to the available V6 brings a significant increase in power and capability with only a slight fuel economy penalty compared to the base engine. Finally, there’s the Duramax turbodiesel with an outstanding torque rating of 369 lb-ft while achieving up to 30 mpg on the highway.

The max tow rating of Colorado depends on the engine. When properly equipped, the base 4-cylinder can tow up to 3,500 lbs, the V6 doubles that with a max tow rating of 7,000 lbs, and the Duramax diesel is the towing king with up to 7,700 lbs of capability.

The base engine and the turbodiesel both use a 6-speed automatic transmission. The V6 is linked to an 8-speed automatic.

Like most of its rivals, Colorado has standard rear-wheel drive and optional 4-wheel drive.
