Tiguan vs. Taos: More of a Good Thing

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan has been freshened, yet remains one of the larger entrants in its class and one of the few to offer a third-row seat. That back bench is small, however, and when in use it eats up most of the cargo space. The 3-row Tiguan is also only available in front-wheel drive.

As a 2-row SUV, the Tiguan provides plenty of passenger room and luggage space. A turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque is the sole engine, mated to a responsive 8-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy trails the segment leaders at 26 mpg with FWD and 24 to 25 mpg with AWD.

The 2022 Tiguan is offered in S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line trim levels. Only the top trim comes standard with all-wheel drive; it’s optional on the others. The S includes forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, 8-inch digital instrument cluster, 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, heated seats, and third-row seating.

The SE adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot intervention (all optional on the S). It also upgrades to an 8-inch infotainment display with wireless smartphone mirroring and adds wireless charging, power driver’s seat, and power liftgate, among other features.

The SE R-Line Black features black 19-inch wheels and exterior accents as well as a panoramic sunroof, parking sensors, and ambient lighting. The SEL R-Line gets leather, ventilated front seats, and a larger digital instrumentation display.

Volkswagen Taos

The Taos is a new entry and VW’s smallest crossover. Although its design apes the look of the big-boy Atlas, the Taos is nearly a foot shorter than a Tiguan. Despite the small footprint, the blocky design yields good interior space.

The seats are pleasantly up off the floor, and the Taos offers adequate room for adults in both the front and rear. Cargo space is pretty good, too, with 27.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats (24.9 with AWD); folding the seatbacks expands that to 65.9 (60.2 with AWD).

A 1.5-liter turbo 4-cylinder is the sole engine and makes a credible 158 horsepower. With front-wheel drive (FWD), it’s paired with an 8-speed automatic, while the all-wheel-drive (AWD) version gets a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. EPA city/highway estimates are 28/36 mpg (FWD) and 25/32 mpg (AWD). Acceleration is sprightly around town, slightly less so on the highway. The suspension tuning is firm yet still comfortable, but the over-boosted steering is a letdown.

Taos comes in S, SE, and SEL trim levels. Forward-collision warning with automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control all cost extra on the S. The SE adds the first three but still charges extra for the latter two. All are included on the SEL.

All Taos models get a digital instrument cluster, an unusual feature in this class. The infotainment display is just 6.5 inches in the S, but other trims get an 8-inch unit as well as wireless smartphone mirroring and wireless charging.
