Audi Grandsphere – Powertrain and Performance
The Grandsphere is underpinned on the PPE (Premium Platform Electric) platform.
It comes with two motors – one mounted on each axle – and puts out 711 horses and 708 pound-feet of torque combined.
It features Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system, too. Audi claims it can sprint to 62 mph from rest in just over four seconds. The concept also features Level 4 autonomy. It also features an air suspension with active dampers.
Audi Grandsphere – Battery, Range, and Charging
The Audi Grandsphere comes packed with a 120 kWh battery pack. It also features an 800-volt charging technology and supports fast-charging up to 270 kW, similar to the Audi e-Tron GT. Thanks to this, the battery can recuperate from five- to 80-percent in less than 25 minutes. If you’re in a hurry, 10 minutes of fast charging can add 186 miles of range.
Audi claims a range of more than 466 miles of a full charge as per the WLTP estimations.
This isn’t too bad for the present times, but if the same specs are offered on the production model that will come out two or three years later, it will be considered average at best.
Audi Grandsphere – Exterior
The Gransphere is nothing short of a plush living room on the inside, and that’s possible due to its sheer size. It measures 210.6 inches in length, 78.7 inches in width, and 54.7 inches in height. The wheelbase measures 125.6 inches! To put things into perspective, the dimensions are pretty similar to the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class sedan.
The face looks similar to other Audis, especially the EVs, but the rest of the concept is quite unique. We could see more similarities with the current crop in the production-spec model, perhaps. It even comes with suicide doors that add to Audi’s vision of making it a top value proposition. The slim LED headlights and taillights look pretty cool, too.
The concept rides on 23-inch wheels that pay homage to the Audi Avus from the 90s. They are wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires. The Grandsphere also features illuminated logos at the front and the back. All-in-all, the concept looks very unique and it’ll be interesting to see how the production version turns out.
Audi Grandsphere – Interior
The car features suicide doors, which means there’s no B-pillar present. Open the doors and you’ll be given a royal welcome with individually staged lights and ambient lights. It looks like all that’s required is a red carpet to roll out every time you open the doors and step out. The Grandsphere comes with large glass surfaces and a see-through ceiling. The geometry of the side window seems to give you an illusion of even more openness. If you follow Audi and its concepts closely, you’ll remember that the same design was showcased on the 2017 AI:CON concept as well.
The car has a massive wheelbase which gives ample space to the occupants inside the cabin. There’s no gear tunnel either and that leads to impressive legroom. When you activate Level 4 autonomy, the steering wheel and the pedals disappear, thus giving the driver even more space. There is also a cooler between the front seats. When not in use, it is concealed under a metallic trim.
Audi has made use of stuff like wood, wool, synthetic textile fabrics, and metal for the seats, cladding, and carpeting. The hornbeam veneers are composed of recycled raw materials. The Grandsphere doesn’t come with any screens either. The displays take the form of projections on the wooden surfaces under the windshield. Sweet!
Audi has mentioned it is working on the production version of the Grandsphere concept, but don’t expect it to come out anytime soon. Given that it will feature Level 4 autonomy, we speculate it to come out in the second half of the decade or later. A third concept in the ‘Sphere’ series will debut next year called the Urbansphere. Will that be an SUV? We’ll have to wait and watch.
