Drag Race: Ferrari GTC4 Lusso Vs Bentley Continental GT Convertible @ Top Speed

Bentley Continental GT V-8 Convertible comes with lots of torque and lots of weight

Its4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine puts out 550 hp and 568 lb/ft. It also comes with an 8-speed DCT and AWD, but weighs in a whopping 5,148 lbs

The Bentley Continental GT V-8 Convertible is the brute of the bunch and it’s not even in its most powerful form. Instead of the W-12, this one “only” has a 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8 that makes 550 horsepower and 568 pound-feet (770 Nm). It’s mated to an eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic that sends power to all four wheels. However, the Bentley is a big ol’ luxury barge and weighs in at 5,148 pounds (2,335 kg).

On paper, it looks like the Ferrari’s having a field day. It has a bigger, 6.3-liter, normally-aspirated V-12 that makes 690 horsepower and 514 pound-feet (697 Nm).

It’s mated to a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic that sends power to all four wheels, but only up to third or fourth gear, at which point it becomes rear-wheel-drive only. At 4,233 pounds (1,920 kg), it is significantly lighter than the Bentley.

No surprises on the 70 mph brake test either

Although both cars come with massive brakes, the much lighter Ferrari stops much earlier

Being a Convertible, Matt feels that the only proper way to drive it is with the roof down (unless you have British weather). In a few seconds, the soft top is down and the cars are ready to race. To no surprise, from a standing start, the Ferrari walks away from the much heavier Bentley. The extra torque did not count for much in the 5,148-pound British GT. Moreover, the more powerful Ferrari also has a lot more revs to play with. And would you listen to that V-12 soundtrack!

The Ferrari is being driven by its owner, who had never raced before. Still, he managed a quarter-mile time of 11.4 seconds, while Matt and the Bentley took 11.6 seconds.

The first rolling race is in comfort mode, with the gearbox left in automatic mode. Both cars take a while to kick down, but Ferrari is quicker to do so. The Italian Stallion rockets ahead and keeps increasing the lead. In sport mode, with manual shifting, the Bentley gets walked again. The Ferrari is just too quick. On the other hand, the Bentley is quite relaxing, according to Matt. Definitely a more laid-back experience than in the more hyperactive Ferrari.

Both cars have massive brakes, but on the 70 mph brake test, Bentley’s weight, once again, becomes apparent. Ferrari beat the Bentley to a halt, by over a car length. Nevertheless, in cars like these, how you feel is more important than how much faster you are than the other guy/girl. Or is it? Tell us below and don’t forget to watch the race.
