Ford Mustang GT And Mach 1 To Lose 10 Horsepower For 2022 @ Top Speed

According to Ford Authority, the 2022 Ford Mustang GT and Mach 1’s 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 gasoline engine will see a 10 horsepower drop. For the Mustang GT, this means it will now produce 450 horses instead of 460, while the Mach 1 will be detuned to 470 horsepower instead of 480. Ford also confirmed that both models’ torque figures will also be reduced by 10 pound-feet, which means both the GT and Mach 1 will now produce 410 pound-feet.

It is surprising to note, however, that the more powerful Mustang Shelby GT500 and its 5.2-liter supercharged V-8 will continue to produce 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft for the 2022 model year.

The main reason for the Ford Mustang GT and Mach 1’s decline in horsepower and torque is due to the Low Emission Vehicle (LEV III) regulatory requirement, which was first introduced in California in 2012. This reasoning was confirmed by a Ford spokesperson to Road and Track.

Despite these performance changes, Ford says that their EPA ratings will remain unchanged for the 2022 model year.

This is not the first time that a vehicle’s performance has been reduced in order to comply with ever-changing environmental regulations. Prior to the 1973 oil crisis, American cars were big, powerful, but inefficient. This led to a period called the Malaise Era, in which regulations such as the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standard dumbed down the performance of inefficient American cars.

Going back to the 2022 Ford Mustang, while these figures may disappoint fans, 450 and 470 horsepower are still good numbers for a muscle car. On the upside, the blue oval brand is introducing a number of minor enhancements for the 2022 model year.

Buyers of the Mustang GT can opt for a California Special, which comes with the GT Performance Package that adds a sportier suspension, Brembo brakes, and limited-slip differential.

On top of these upgrades, the California Special adds a blacked-out grille, racing stripes, GT/CS stickers, 19-inch five-spoke wheels, rear spoiler, rear fender scoop, suede interior trim, just to name a few.

Those who prefer the 2.3-liter EcoBoost Premium variant can opt for the Stealth Edition. This model comes with blacked-out exterior trims, 19-inch Ebony aluminum wheels, a performance rear wing, and LED tail lights with clear lenses borrowed from the Mustang Ice White Edition.

Order books for the 2022 Ford Mustang will begin later this year, with the first batch of units hitting dealers in the first quarter of 2022.
