Here Is Our Review Of Netflix’s Schumacher @ Top Speed

In case you were wondering, yes, there are spoilers ahead, but if you are familiar with Schumacher’s career, it should not be that surprising.

Overview

The documentary features countless snippets of interviews with the iconic racing driver himself, his friends, family, former team bosses, and competitors such as Damon Hill and Mika Häkkinen.

It also consists of clips of some of his most memorable races and moments from his career.

The documentary does not spend much time talking about Michael Schumacher’s life as a whole but instead has a primary focus on his career in F1. On rare occasions, it does focus on his life, but it is always to explain or tie back to his racing career.

Towards the beginning of the film, it describes how Schumacher got his first drive in F1 at the now-defunct team Jordan. The only reason Schumacher got that drive at all in the first place is that the driver who would have been driving pulled out and Jordan needed a driver.

It also featured a rather chilling moment, Ayrton Senna’s death at Imola in 1994. The film gives you the pieces to a puzzle that you cannot help but put together. That puzzle is that, if Senna had not died as a result of that crash, likely, Schumacher would not have won the championship that year.

It then walks through his second world title fight in 1995 when his main competitor was Damon Hill. Then, it describes how his time at Ferrari was split between struggling to win consistently from 1996-1999 and utter dominance from 2000-2004.

The best part is not even a specific scene

Quite possibly, the best part of this film is the insight it gives as to who Schumacher was as a person.

You see the intricate details of his relationships with team members and his attitude towards his profession.

The determination and passion he had for racing are unlike anything we have ever seen in a driver until more recently, one could argue, with Lewis Hamilton. He appeared to have a personality that aired on the side of shyness, but when a situation called for it, he could burst out of his shell at a moment’s notice.

What does this film tell us about the resurgence of F1?

So what does this film mean about the overarching world of Formula 1 and its rising popularity, especially in America?

This film means that more and more people are not just aware of Formula 1’s existence but are genuine fans of it. Perhaps this film will tell young people that there is more to the world of motorsport than NASCAR, which is not incredibly popular due to its outdated image, and that Formula 1 can have unforgettable moments.

Formula 1 may see a resurgence in the U.S., which may cause all of motorsport to see a resurgence in the U.S. as people are reminded just how exciting this industry can be.
