We know that the MC20 is powered by a hybrid powertrain, focused around Maserati’s new 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6. It was believed that the new GranTurismo would be powered by a version of the same powertrain. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
As it turns out, we will not be getting an internal combustion engine in the new GranTurismo. Instead, this will be the marque’s first fully electric car.
A transition to an EV lineup was expected, just like other carmakers are doing, but Maserati decided to surprise everyone by speeding up the process. The new all-electric GT is part of Maserati’s plan to bring out 14 new models, by 2023.
Back when we talked about the Maserati Ghibli Hybrid, we mentioned that Maserati will have a separate brand called Folgore. This will be the EV branch of the Italian carmaker and the GranTurismo is expected to be its flagship.
For now, we know that the car will have three electric motors – one on the front axle and two on the rear. The system will run on an 800-volt system, which would enable very fast charging. The platform will support torque vectoring on the rear axle.
Instead of developing a bespoke EV platform, Maserati has chosen to integrate the electric drivetrain into the existing internal combustion platform.
We still don’t have any figures regarding performance or range, but a “GranTurismo” needs to be able to cover long distances. We hope the new Maserati GT will live up to the name.
At the same time, any information about the internal combustion variant is murky, so there is still a chance we might get a great-sounding Maserati GT. That said, even if that happens, it will be a V-6 hybrid at best.
