RML Short Wheelbase – A 60s Throwback Without And Of The Drawbacks @ Top Speed

RML Short Wheelbase

This car shouldn’t be confused with another kit-car, GTO Engineering’s Squalo, which is also inspired by the 250 GTO.
The RML Short Wheel Base borrows a 5.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine from a Ferrari 550 Maranello. The engine puts out 485 horsepower and 419 pound-feet of torque. That might not sound like much, but the car is lightweight coming in at just under 3,200 lbs. The engine is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive.

The car will be capable of sprinting to 60 miles per hour in 4.1 seconds and can achieve a top speed of just under 185 miles an hour.

Nothing encapsulates the essence of driving more, than a V12 engine with to a manual transmission and rear wheel drive. It is analog driving in its purest form. The RML Short Wheelbase, however, certainly manages to capture some of that 60’s charm. inside as well A great deal of emphasis is put on the luxury element. Step inside the cabin and it exudes a sense of quality. We also find custom-made seats that with the option to trim them in leather or alcantara. Every single button and switch is made in-house by the firm.

RML Group’s head of design Jonathan Bowen stated, “When we began work on the interior, we had a ’no-plastic’ ethos. It would have been easy to save a great deal of money by obtaining ordinary gauges and buttons, but they’d never have met our stringent requirements. As a result, every switch, button, and clock in the Short Wheelbase is custom-made and developed in-house. The conical dials on the dashboard are influenced by high-end watchmaking.
Everything in the passenger compartment is made from either machined aluminum, glass, or leather.”

This Ferrari 250 GTO resto-mod features modern creature comforts and doesn’t suffer from some of the setbacks of the original.

The cabin is well thought out and comes with air-con, electric windows, cup holders, and several storage cubbies.
It also has a cutting-edge head-unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The screen can be stowed away at the touch of the button to de-clutter the dash. The cabin of this bespoke resto-mod can easily accommodate drivers up to a height of 6.5 feet, and it also includes an adjustable steering column.

Final Thoughts

What the Short Wheelbase essentially is a long distance GT car to cross continents in. With an exterior as pretty as this one and the reliability of a modern car, this really is a match made in heaven. The car will be introduced later this year, with customer deliveries to follow soon. The price for this exquisite automobile is yet to be announced, but one this is for sure, it won’t cost as much as the original. So, a very usable car indeed then, but it is unlikely to be used in that way, given that production is limited to just 30 examples.
