What Does The 2022 Tundra Look Like?
The 2022 Tundra comes with a big grille up front with the ‘Toyota’ lettering on it. You can see an LED strip right under the branding here. This could be a piece of standard equipment on the TRD Pro and an optional accessory for other trims. It also features marker lights, which means the truck is going to be wider than 80 inches. Zoom in a little and you’ll be able to see the forward-facing camera here under the LED strip. The bottom bar features ‘Tundra’ embossing, too.
The LED headlights come with daytime running lights. There are air vents placed here and they don’t seem to be faux vents. You can see a mesh grille behind it with an opening. Given it’s a Toyota, we have to check for faux air vents, after all (cough… Supra… cough). Finally, there’s also a skid plate at the bottom finished in black.
The 2022 Tundra rides on 18-inch, black BBS Forged wheels with red TRD wheel caps. They are wrapped in 285/65 section Wildpeak All-Terrain tires. The wheel arches come with black plastic cladding that has a pattern on them. The side profile of this crew cab, otherwise, is quite clean. The A- and B- pillars are finished in black, too.
The company hasn’t revealed how it looks at the rear. Overall, it looks sharper and more aggressive with sharp cuts and creases. Since looks are subjective, we’ll leave that up to you to decide. Even the interior pics are not revealed, but we can see seats upholstered in red leather.
What Powers The 2022 Toyota Tundra?
Presently, the Tundra comes with a 5.7-liter, V-8 engine under the hood that dishes out 381 ponies and 401 pound-feet of twist. Power is sent to the wheels via a six-speed auto gearbox. This isn’t a fuel-efficient mill by any means. It delivers less than 20 mpg.
This has prompted the automaker to replace the mill with a smaller, V-6 engine to comply with the environmental-conscious norms. The automaker had revealed an image of the engine cover and it reads ‘iForce MAX’ with blue lettering, which means it will be a hybrid. It’ll be interesting to see if the engine will be paired to a mild-hybrid system or a plug-in hybrid.
In all likelihood, it will be the same 3.5-liter, twin-turbo V-6 that we recently saw on the Land Cruiser 300 Series. It is offered in two flavors, with the gasoline option putting out 409 horses and 479 pound-feet of oomph. The engine comes mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox. So, expect the six-speed auto transmission from the current Tundra to be retired, too. Also, an electric Tundra is on the way. Maybe not immediately, but it could happen sooner than you think.
The truck is expected to be launched in the coming months and should arrive Stateside by the end of 2021. The 2021 Tundra starts at a notch over $34,000, but the 2022 model will be slightly premium. It will, perhaps, come with a starting price of $36,000. That means the TRD Pro trim could now breach the $50,000 mark. Will this off-road trim square up against the heavyweights like the F-150 Raptor and the Ram 1500 TRX? It will be significantly cheaper than both, though. It looks like Toyota is surely upping the ante with the 2022 Tundra.
