Toyota GRMN Yaris Is Japan’s Ultimate Hot Hatch That’s Capped At 500 Units @ Top Speed

Two Packages To Choose From

Japanese buyers will be able to choose between two packages of the GRMN Yaris: the Circuit Package or Rally Package. Both models also offer reduced weight.

The Circuit Pack is for those who want a GRMN Yaris that’s mainly used for the track. You can easily tell the GRMN Yaris with the Circuit Package thanks to its more aggressive front chin, bespoke 18-inch BBS wheels, extended side skirts, and carbon fiber rear wing. This variant also comes with Bilstein adjustable shocks, which lowers its ride height by 0.40 inches, and the availability of a Matte Steel paint that’s capped to only 50 units. With this package, the GRMN Yaris is 44 pounds lighter than the standard model.

On the other hand, the Rally Package emphasizes the ability to be able to drive on rougher terrain, which means you get GR shock absorbers and short stabilizer bars, and a GR under guard set

On the other hand, those who want to drive their GRMN Yaris out on various terrains such as dirt roads may opt for the Rally Package. Rather than going for a ground-hugging look like the Circuit Package, the Rally Package emphasizes the ability to be able to drive on rougher terrain, which means you get GR shock absorbers and short stabilizer bars, a GR under guard set, a GR roll cage for the interior. Opting for this package offers a total weight reduction of 66 pounds.

Both models also come with a new carbon fiber hood, while the addition of 545 more weld spots means that the GRMN Yaris is even more rigid than the standard model.

Goodbye Rear Seats And Infotainment, Because Weight Reduction Bro

Both models of the Toyota GRMN Yaris don’t come with an infotainment system and rear seats as a way to reduce weight.

Both models of the Toyota GRMN Yaris come with stripped-out interiors to reduce weight. Some of the items that were deleted include the infotainment system and rear seats (which were pointlessly small, to begin with).

In lieu of all these are more track-focused items, such as Recaro bucket seats, a more aggressive analog gauge cluster design, a roll cage for the GRMN Yaris with the Rally Package, or a torsion bar for the Circuit Package.

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

While the 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine produces the same 268 horsepower, its torque is now 287 pound-feet, an increase of 15 pound-feet over the standard model

While its 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine still produces 268 horsepower, its torque has been increased to 287 pound-feet, an increase of 15 pound-feet over the standard GR Yaris. It still comes with Toyota’s trick GR-Four all-wheel drive (AWD) system, but it now comes with mechanical limited-slip differentials (LSDs) at the front and rear axles instead of the standard model’s Torsen diffs.

The six-speed manual has also been modified to have closer ratios, and a low final gear set, which Toyota says has been improved through repeated “breaking and fixing”.

All of these upgrades, according to Toyota, transform the GR Yaris into a hot hatch that “can be driven faster and with more peace of mind, with improved braking force, grip, cornering and following performance based on feedback from professional drivers.”

The GRMN Yaris is currently the ultimate Toyota in our eyes. While the GR Supra may be the fastest and most powerful one you can buy right now, its co-development with BMW means it’s not the truest showcase of Toyota’s technological prowess. There’s also the GR 86, but the affordable rear-wheel drive (RWD) is much more tame and accessible to most people compared to the GRMN Yaris.

Want one? Reservations for the Toyota GRMN Yaris have already commenced in Japan, and it has a base price of ¥7,317,000 (around $64,372). Opting for the Rally Package brings the price up to ¥8,378,764 (around $73,714), while the Circuit Package is good for ¥8,467,000 (around $74,490). Even if you have the money for one, your build slot isn’t even guaranteed, because each of the 500 slots will be via a lottery basis.

If you’re disappointed that Toyota is once again not bringing its most track-capable hot hatch ever, don’t fret as the Japanese automaker has continually been teasing the upcoming GR Corolla. While it may not be as track-focused as this GRMN Yaris, it will still have the capabilities of the standard GR Yaris, but in a much bigger and more practical package.
