Council Post: Three Powerful Ways To Protect Your Freelance Business

By Josh Kohlbach, CEO and founder of Rymera Web Co, the makers of Wholesale Suite, the No. 1 WooCommerce wholesale solution.

2021 has seen a massive rise in remote work. Especially after the pandemic hit the world, more people started opting for location-independent and remote work.

That’s one reason why freelancing has emerged as a popular career choice for many. However, to build a successful freelancing career, you need a lot of hard work, dedication and commitment.

When you launch your freelancing career, it’s important to remember that unlike a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. job, here you don’t have a boss to tell you what to do. You have to find your own contracts, take care of your agreements, market yourself and do everything to make your business flourish.

For that, you need to know what exactly needs to be done so that you can protect your freelance business from facing any problem. So here are three powerful points to follow to ensure that your freelancing career is a success.

1. Diversify your services.

If you want to grow your freelancing career, you have to diversify your services. This is extremely important if you want more work to keep coming one project after the other.

So instead of offering just copywriting services, you could also offer other services, like proofreading, editing, formatting, etc.

Many marketers want their writers to schedule their posts on their websites and social profiles. Some even want you to write converting taglines for social media.

But many freelancers don’t include these services in their contracts. However, with the immense growth of social media marketing and social commerce, many clients may not want to hire you if you limit yourself from offering these extra services.

So include them in your services and highlight them on your website. This will not only make you appear more professional but will also get you more clients.

2. Have a powerful online presence.

Simply setting up a professional website and waiting for clients to show up is not how your freelancing career works. People won’t know about your services unless you tell them about them. So promote your services and let more and more people know about them. One of the best ways to do that is to use your social profiles.

Add a blog to your website and share your content on social media with relevant hashtags. This will make you more visible and help you reach out to your target audience more easily. But don’t forget to engage with your followers. This can be in the form of likes, shares and comments. Doing so will help you increase your visibility and make you more recognizable. When people start recognizing you, they start trusting you. This makes it easier for you to get hired for your services.

You should also make the most out of your LinkedIn and Twitter handles. Both platforms can act as an amazing source for landing your first client. Keep your profiles updated and add all your work experience to your LinkedIn profile. This will help people know about your recent work and it will also act as your résumé. Use it to make a solid first impression for your audience.

3. Look for long-term clients.

If you really want your freelancing career to flourish, you have to look for long-term clients. It’s okay to have a few short-term clients to get your career started, but after a point, it can be exhausting to keep looking for new clients every time you complete a job.

This doesn’t mean you should never take on any short-term work. But having a few long-term clients is important because it offers financial stability. Also, by nurturing your relationship with your long-term clients, you can expand your business through referrals and recommendations that they might have for you.

Being a freelancer can be fun. You don’t have to report to anyone; you can set your own schedule, work on your own terms, charge your own rates and basically become your own boss. But to keep it the way it seems, you have to prepare yourself for the pitfalls that come along with it. And nothing can work better than to have your own marketing strategy and a solid goal for your career. The above points can make it easy for you to have a clear marketing strategy and define your goals to protect your business and grow it for success.
