The market-cap weighted index offers a broader look at the U.S. stock market and economy than the Dow Jones industrial average, which is comprised of just 30 large-cap companies like Apple (AAPL), Walmart (WMT), ExxonMobil (XOM) and JPMorgan Chase (JPM).

The S&P 100 is a subset of the S&P 500, generally featuring the largest, most established companies. Each of the S&P indexes have one of more corresponding exchange traded funds (ETFs) under the SPDR (pronounced “spider”) brand.
