A quick-thinking motorist has rescued a three-year-old boy after he wandered down the middle of a poorly lit suburban street and into oncoming traffic.

Terrifying dash cam footage showed the toddler named Nathan rush towards the moving vehicle in Panania, south-west Sydney, on Saturday night.

The little boy, who glowed from the car’s headlights, waved his arms up and down as the car approached.

The motorist saw Nathan in the nick of time and came to a stop, as did the vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver jumped out of his car and scooped up the three-year-old, who had escaped from the family home.

‘I stopped to save him. This place is very dark,’ the man told Nine News

The man returned Nathan to his family about ten minutes later.

Nathan’s brother Michael said the family was distracted packing the car when the little boy went on his night time stroll.

‘While my step mum was occupied, my baby brother, Nathan, he walked out the door and walked into the roads,’ he said.

Michael said the family are incredibly thankful for the driver’s efforts.
