Mean Girls star Jonathan Bennett has opened up about the time himself and fiance Jaymes Vaughan were rejected from their dream wedding venue because they are gay.

The 39-year-old actor and his partner recalled the challenges of locking down a wedding venue during their cover shoot with The Knot’s summer 2021 issues, Pride & Joy.

Jonathan recalled the ‘sucked punch’ feeling when the owner of a Palace Resorts property in Mexico denied them access because of their same-sex relationship.

He explained: ‘When we got engaged, the owner said he couldn’t marry us because we’re two men and it goes against his morals. That was a sucker punch to the gut.

‘We decided in that moment that our wedding was bigger than us. It’s our wedding, but it isn’t just about us. It’s about the LGBTQ+ community. We’re really making a point to make this wedding very loud on purpose.’

The Cake Wars star revealed that the couple eventually found the perfect new location for the loud and proud nuptials.

‘We knew we could go to the UNICO Hotel, because on social and in their marketing, they have shown us that we’re welcome there,’ he explained. ‘When we first started talking about having our wedding there, they were excited for us, which is what everyone’s wedding is supposed to be.’

The Hallmark actor and the TV personality revealed their engagement in an interview with People magazine last November as the pair detailed what happened with Jaymes got down on one knee.

Jonathan, who is best known for playing Aaron Samuels in the 2004 classic Mean Girls, says he couldn’t hold back the tears when his partner of three years proposed.

Speaking about the special moment, Jonathan recalled: ‘Jaymes holding a sign that said “We never did find our song, so I wrote it for you.”

‘That’s when I knew was getting proposed to because it was the same type of sign he made when he told me he loved me for the first time. And then I began to ugly-cry the ugliest cry anyone has ever cried.’

He continued: ‘And then I heard a song playing from a place I didn’t even realize we had a speaker and Jaymes told me to just listen. It was Jaymes’s voice singing the most beautiful song I had ever heard, a song about our relationship.

‘I’ve always loved his voice, and to hear his voice singing to me was really special. It’s hard to describe what it feels like to have a song written about you that is so specific and that reassures all your insecurities. It was the best song I’ve ever heard.’
