Gervonta Davis vs. Mario Barrios live updates, results, highlights

One of the fastest-rising young stars in boxing will make his return Saturday. Gervonta “Tank” Davis is moving up a weight class to challenge WBA (Regular) 140-pound champion Mario Barrios on Showtime PPV at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

Davis (24-0, 23 KOs) is a prolific knockout artist who is coming off a highlight-reel finish of former champion Leo Santa Cruz last October.

The 26-year-old Davis will headline his second pay-per-view, and he’ll do it by making his debut at 140 pounds against an undefeated opponent who will have a significant height advantage.

Barrios (26-0, 17 KOs) won the WBA title in 2019 when he defeated Batry Akhmedov and last defended it on the undercard of Davis-Santa Cruz with a sixth-round knockout of Ryan Karl. Barrios stands 5-10 and will be nearly five inches taller than his opponent.

It will be a tall task for Davis as he aims to prove that he’s a PPV draw against one of his toughest tests to date.

Akhmedov overwhelms, forces Mendez to retire due to injury

9:49 p.m.: After eight rounds, it was all Akhmedov but Mendez ended up injuring his right hand and his corner asked for the fight to be stopped. A great performance by Akhmedov, who pushed Barrios to the limit in his only loss. Akhmedov improves to 9-1 with his 8th knockout and will certainly be in the hunt for a big fight at 140 pounds.

9:40 p.m.: After six rounds, Akhmedov appears to be in control. He’s landing some big shots but Mendez has been taking them well. However, Mendez has yet to truly let his hands go and is allowing Akhmedov to dictate how and where this fight is being fought.

9:27 p.m.:  Akhmedov has dominated the action thus far with his output and body attack. Mendez has been really economical with his punches and will absolutely have to turn it up as we enter the fourth round.

9:08 p.m.: The Davis-Barrios PPV is live. Yes, most are tuning in for Tank but the co-main event between Lubin and Rosario should be an excellent co-main. But we’re getting started with Batyr Akhmedov facing Argenis Mendez. Ahkmedov has only suffered one loss and that was to Mario Barrios.
