Meet Grant Stuard, Mr. Irrelevant of this year’s NFL Draft

The conclusion of another NFL Draft means there’s a new member of the “Mr. Irrelevant” club.

Grant Stuard was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday with the 259th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the final selection of the three-day event. Stuard played linebacker and was a captain at University of Houston.

An All-AAC player in each of his last two seasons with the Cougars, Stuard celebrated his big moment with both of his parents, with whom he hasn’t always had the smoothest relationship. Stuard told ESPN when he was younger he “was bouncing from home to home” and had to care for his siblings, not knowing if they would eat or which school they’d be attending.

“My mom is a drug addict. … She used to work in the sex industry,” Stuard told ESPN. “My dad was in prison a good portion of our young life. Even when he wasn’t in prison, he was very absent when we were growing up. That results in both parents being absent the majority of the time.”

Stuard said his mom “pops in every now and again,” while his dad is “doing much better” and has helped Stuard’s younger brother.

The Buccaneers seem thrilled to have the newest “Mr. Irrelevant.”

“We love him as a person and, obviously, as a player,” general manager Jason Licht said, according to ESPN. “He’s got a lot emotion on the field. He’s had a little bit of a tough life, he’s been taking care of his siblings. … He’s a very mature person, a very accountable person and a very accountable football player. Guys that can get through tough times and adversity — that’s a big box to check for us.”

Last year’s “Mr. Irrelevant,” linebacker Tae Crowder, started six games and made 11 appearances for the Giants in 2020, recording 57 total tackles, one sack, three tackles for loss and a 43-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.
