49ers running back Raheem Mostert is out for the season after a knee injury suffered in Sunday’s win over the Lions forced him to undergo surgery. Even before news broke of his status on Tuesday, thousands of fans commented on the unfortunate news — including, his wife said, direct messages saying he should kill himself.
Raheem Mostert’s wife, Devon Mostert, said in an Instagram Stories post on Sunday that she was heartbroken at the negative messages. Many of the comments were in regard to Mostert’s fantasy football points. Devon Mostert made sure to remind people that this is real life, not fake.

It’s called “Fantasy Football” for a reason … It’s *NOT* real.
No player should receive “HUNDREDS, THOUSANDS” of “heartless and degrading” messages after a game.
Let’s all be better.

“The nasty things some of you just carelessly say is gut wrenching,” Devon Mostert wrote. “I don’t think y’all get it. Football is my husband’s job. It’s how my family EATS. To read such HEARTLESS and degrading comments about the person I LOVE hurts. And I try so hard to shake them off … I do. But when there’s HUNDREDS, THOUSANDS. It’s a lot.”
Mostert had two carries for 20 yards in the 49ers’ opening drive before injuring his knee.
Three days later, Devon made another Instagram Story post sharing how their family has received tons of positive and supportive messages since her original post. She chose to highlight Suicide Prevention Awareness Month as well, saying, “BE KIND! ALL THE TIME!”
Based on Devon Mostert’s post, it seems her husband received death threats following his season-ending injury news. She ended her first message in a more positive manner, saying he will be better eventually.
Devon Mostert’s post reminded fans that her husband is human, and that the focus should be on him getting back to full strength and health — not on a fake sports competition. She also highlighted that Raheem Mostert tried to compete for as long as he could, until he could no longer perform his best due to his injury.
She ended her Wednesday message saying “He’ll be back stronger! And I promise the comeback is going to be legendary.”
