The 10 most electrifying athletes in New York sports

The anticipated return of Saquon Barkley to the Giants from a torn ACL injury suffered in Week 2 of the 2020 season got us thinking: Who are the most electrifying athletes presently in New York? We’re not necessarily talking about the best players in the area here, although there definitely is significant Venn crossover on those two lists. Here is The Post’s Peter Botte’s Top 10:

1. Kevin Durant, Nets

It was impossible to take your eyes off the Nets’ superstar, even during his first year back on the court after missing all of the 2019-20 season due to a torn Achilles. KD still can score from anywhere on the floor, and his team-carrying performances and duels with Giannis Antetokounmpo in a second-round playoff loss to the Bucks were mesmerizingly transcendent.

2. Jacob deGrom, Mets

Every start this season was an absolute must-see event until deGrom was shut down at the All-Star break with forearm tightness. The Mets’ ace was headed to his third NL Cy Young award in four years with potentially historic pitching numbers (1.08 ERA, 14.3 strikeouts per nine innings). He also generated great excitement at the plate with a .364 batting average (12-for-33).

3. Saquon Barkley, Giants

The Giants’ chances for a return to the playoffs for the first time since 2016 largely hinge on how quickly the 2018 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year can regain full form following his season-ending knee injury one year ago. (And, yes, if the offensive line can open holes for him!) The fourth-year back averaged more than 1,700 combined yards in his first two seasons while totaling 23 touchdowns.
