The greens at Quail Hollow were resurfaced in 2017 with a new Bermuda grass, Champion Ultradwarf Bermuda. They average near 6,500 square feet. Thousands of trees were removed as part of the changes, and new holes were built at holes 1, 4 and 5. Other modifications were made at the 9th and 11th holes. The opening two holes were combined, and No. 1 now plays as a more demanding par 4, along with hole No. 11. The difficulty becomes greater as wind comes into play. Water is in play on six holes, including the final five on the back nine.

Quail Hollow is a long course, and a venue now more suited to players with strong and long driving stats. Beyond the strokes gained stats, review players’ par-4 efficiency (450+ yards), par-4 scoring and approach play, preferably from 150-175 yards. Driving accuracy was previously more significant, but players who are accurate with stronger Tee-to-Green strokes gained stats will prevail as the heavier rough can be more penal. The resurfaced greens have put a greater premium on putting, along with Scrambling. Hitting greens and getting the ball close will be a struggle for players that are not solid ball strikers or are off line from the tee. In 2018, Quail Hollow ranked as the fifth hardest PGA TOUR course to score. The closing four-hole stretch is difficult, and includes ‘The Green Mile’ at holes 16, 17 and 18 – three of the most difficult scoring holes on the course.
