A deaf woman has posted an emotional video claiming she was refused service at a Dunkin’ Donuts because she couldn’t hear her server.

Shannon Heroux said she shared her story to spread awareness of discrimination in an attempt to stop someone else going through what she has.

The Uber driver posted an emotional video to TikTok, saying that the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has made life increasingly difficult to communicate as people donned masks to protect the wider community.

She said: “A little while ago, I got refused service at a Dunkin’ Donuts because I’m deaf,” she told the camera, breaking into tears.

“I didn’t know how to process it, I was confused, I couldn’t hear anything. I wear an implant but I was not wearing it at the time.

“I’ve never been refused service before and it hurts, it hurts really bad.”

But even when the manager got involved, Shannon said the situation didn’t improve, with him even refusing to write anything down so she could communicate with him.

“She goes to the manager and I can tell by his body language that he was going off and kept making hand signals and I told him I couldn’t hear him and needed to read his lips and he refused to write anything down, he refused to take off his mask,” Shannon continued.



But Shannon claimed this is not the first time she has been discriminated against, with giant shops like Costco, Walmart, and Target also giving her problems

Through her sobs she said: “We do the right thing and you guys don’t care, you kick me out for wanting to get a tea, like really?”

“We are standing six feet apart, there’s plexiglass between us, I’m wearing my mask, what more do you want?! We struggle so much during this pandemic, enough is enough.

“People don’t believe I’m deaf because I speak so well, and I could tell he didn’t believe me! It’s a cursing and a blessing.”

“I shouldn’t have to go through this, no deaf person should go through this.

“I’m at my breaking point in this pandemic, I don’t even want to run into people anymore. I’ve been discriminated against this whole pandemic and it’s time someone did something.”

But Shannon claimed this is not the first time she has been discriminated against, with giant shops like Costco, Walmart, and Target also giving her problems.

“I want an apology, I’ve never felt this way and I don’t wish this on anyone. What that manager did was wrong, this happened in California, and no one was willing to help me. I just want an apology.”

She also posted an update, saying the corporate department of Dunkin’ Donuts had reached out and wants to work with her to spread awareness.

They have also apologised to her and come up with solutions to help other deaf people, including cashiers using clear masks when taking orders, or keeping a whiteboard nearby in case someone needs it.

However, the manager who had refused to assist her has been allowed to keep his job after being given a write up.
