Saoirse-Monica Jackson delivers an unexpected twist on The Bard’s work

Derry Girls actress Saoirse-Monica Jackson is set to perform Shakespeare in a brilliantly unique way – in the dark.

Curated in partnership with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, the weekly series will celebrate the return of live theatre and Saoirse will bring an unexpected twist to some of the world’s most iconic plays.

Shakespeare in the Dark delivers a unique and playfully dark twist on the familiar as audiences across the globe head back to the theatre.

It’s been created to celebrate the creative and irreverent and will bring a new take to Shakespeare’s work.

The 27-year-old became a hugely popular figure as Erin Quinn in the award-winning sitcom hit Channel 4 and now she is set to feature in the new weekly content series which is hoping to reinvigorate the UK’s passion for theatre and culture.

Saoirse-Monica Jackson plays a brilliant part in Shakespeare in the Dark

For her role, the actress has been far removed from her familiar comedic persona as she performs multiple roles simultaneously, including Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and not one, but all three witches in Macbeth. She brings with her her individual brand of wit and humour.

Hailing from Northern Ireland, the spiritual home of The Sexton, Saoirse worked closely with experts at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust to bring The Bard’s works to life, helping her to deliver a star performance that leaves no doubt as to why she is on course to set Hollywood alight.

Dr. Anjna Chouhan at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, said: “Shakespeare is widely recognised as the world’s greatest playwright, so how better to demonstrate the power of performance than by getting up-close-and-personal with his wonderful plays?

“With his work still as relevant today as it was 400 years ago, this reimagining of some of his most iconic plays is sure to ignite the inner thespian in all of us. So be like Shakespeare, march to the beat of your own drum and head on over to The Sexton’s Instagram channel and enjoy something truly unexpected.”

Shakespeare in the Dark will air every Thursday throughout October from 6pm on The Sexton’s Instagram channel.

Saoirse delivers a stunning performance

Each week will see Saoirse bring a unique and unexpected take on a new Shakespeare play, including Macbeth, Hamlet, The Taming of the Shrew and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The series started this Thursday with Act 3, Scene 1 of Hamlet and the infamous Get Thee to a Nunnery scene.

Saoirse delivers a stunning performance which was as far removed as possible from the classrooms and corridors of Derry Girls’ Our Lady Immaculate College.

You can watch the shows on The Sexton’s Instagram channel.
