After a disastrous five-year spell at Arsenal littered with mistakes and even worse stint at Schalke, Shkodran Mustafi’s faltering career has been handed a lifeline in the form of a transfer to Spanish side Levante.

The Germany international had been without a club for the beginning of this season after the Bundesliga outfit had opted against renewing his short-term contract at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

Mustafi had originally been touted with a move to Italy after his nightmare period at Schalke, with Serie A side Torino the most likely suitor, before even they pulled out of a deal for the 29-year-old.

In the wake of Torino walking away from the potential switch, La Liga outfit Levante swooped and agreed to take Mustafi on an 18-month contract at the Estadio Ciudad.

The switch was confirmed in an official statement from the club that read: “Levante UD has reached an agreement with Shkodran Mustafi (04/17/1992, Bad Hersfeld, Germany) for the incorporation of the footballer to the ranks of the Levantine team until June 2023, with the option of one more season.”

In a statement of his own, Mustafi bizarrely claimed that he does “not have that much talent” – sentiments that are hardly likely to make for enjoyable reading for the Levante faithful.

The former Arsenal man claimed: “I was talking to the club for a long time. From the first moment, I liked the idea of playing for Levante.

“I can bring experience and I am a hard worker. I don’t have that much talent, I will work hard and leave everything on the field and be to the max.

“We are going to give everything to take the club as high as possible.”

Mustafi had his Arsenal contract terminated earlier this year after being deemed surplus to requirements by Mikel Arteta.

The central defender made just nine appearances under the Spaniard before he was axed.

Following his move back to his home country, Schalke won one game from the 11 in the Bundesliga that Mustafi started.

Overall, the German side won just two league matches after signing the former World Cup winner following his exit from Arsenal.
