Kylian Mbappe booed by number of PSG fans following Real Madrid transfer fallout

The French striker was heavily linked with a world record move to Real Madrid this summer but could now depart Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent next year amid uncertainty

The future of Kylian Mbappe is less clear than ever despite the French striker staying at Paris Saint-Germain for the 2021/22 campaign.

Real Madrid lodged a world record bid – which Sky Sports reported to be in excess of €220million – which received no response from PSG in the closing hours of the summer transfer window.

It was an extraordinary development that was particularly noteworthy due to the French striker being out of contract in Paris next summer.

The 22-year-old will become a free agent when his contract in the French capital expires on 30 June 2022 and there is a real risk for the Ligue 1 giants that the star player will leave as a free agent.

Kylian Mbappe’s name was booed ahead of PSG’s Ligue 1 clash against Clermont Foot

Real Madrid are likely to make the signing of the striker a priority next year and failure to secure his signature would represent a significant blow to Los Blancos.

The Spanish club have invested a lot of time and energy into their long-term transfer target, who appears set to play this season amid significant doubt over his future.

Contract extension talks between Les Parisiens and Mbappe have ground to a standstill in recent months and there is little expectation that he will renew his deal.

The striker continues to be a key player for PSG despite this situation as he started and scored in Saturday’s four-goal victory at home to Clermont Foot in Ligue 1.

Mbappe led the line for Mauricio Pochettino’s side from the start and he netted their third goal of the game in the 55 th minute, before making way for Mauro Icardi with 11 minutes of regulation time remaining.

Yet the home fans are not entirely happy with the striker, with audible whistles and jeering when his name was read out before kick-off, as highlighted by Marca.

Mbappe was the only PSG player who did not receive universal applause when the teams were read out ahead of kick-off.

It was a similar situation in Pochettino’s side previous Ligue 1 game – prior to the close of the transfer window – when Mbappe was jeered by travelling PSG fans despite netting both goals in a 2-0 win at Reims.

The former Monaco striker has now scored four goals in PSG’s opening five Ligue 1 matches this campaign, with his side winning each of their opening matches.

He appears set to play a major role in their ambitions this campaign, although he is yet to feature alongside both Neymar and new signing Lionel Messi – who signed a two-year deal at PSG after leaving Barcelona – in what promises to be a fearsome attacking trio.

While the anger of PSG fans with Mbappe is likely to dissipate, his future looks certain to be a major distraction throughout the season.
