Massive fire erupts near docks with witnesses reporting explosions from the site

Fire crews have told people to avoid the area in Kirkdale, Liverpool, in Merseyside, and for residents to keep their doors and windows closed with the blaze seen across the city

A huge fire has ripped through a scrapyard in Kirkdale, Liverpool, in Merseyside

A huge fire has ripped through a scrapyard near docks in Liverpool after erupting late on Saturday night with locals claiming to have heard an explosion.

Fire crews and police are currently at the scene in Bank Hall Street, Kirkdale, Merseyside, after being alerted to the blaze at around 10.30pm, reported the Liverpool Echo.

They have 14 fire engines and two aerial devices tackling the fire.

People are being asked to avoid the area and residents nearby are being advised to keep all windows and doors closed.

Merseyside Fire stated: “Now 14 fire engines & 2 aerial appliances in attendance at fire which is 50 x 50 metres in area & 7 metres high.

“Incident sectorised with main jets and ground monitors in use. Please avoid the area and keep doors/windows closed.”

People in the area have reported hearing “explosions” coming from the site of the fire.

One person, Andy Teebay said: “The police have a huge cordon now and have been pushed back.

“You can hear lots of explosions.”

An earlier message from Merseyside Fire stated: “Fire crews have been called to a large fire at a scrapyard on Bank Hall Street, off Derby Road in Kirkdale this evening.

“Crews were alerted at 10.30pm and on scene at 10.33pm.

“Seven fire engines and an aerial appliance are in attendance.”

Crews arrived to find a large amount of scrap fully involved in fire. Merseyside Police have been requested to assist with road closures, please avoid the area.
