The Queen will rest and undertake light duties today

The Queen will spend Friday resting and undertaking light duties after her first night in hospital in years, a Buckingham Palace source has said.

Her Majesty, 95, went to the King Edward VII hospital, in central London, on Wednesday afternoon for “preliminary investigations”, Buckingham Palace said.

She then returned to Windsor Castle on Thursday.

The overnight stay came shortly after she cancelled an official trip to Northern Ireland, based on medical advice.

The Palace has given no details as to why the Queen required medical attention, but it is understood she does not have Covid.

A statement on Thursday read: “Following medical advice to rest for a few days, the Queen attended hospital on Wednesday afternoon for some preliminary investigations, returning to Windsor Castle at lunchtime today, and remains in good spirits.”

Courtiers have suggested that the Queen’s overnight stay is not a cause for alarm.

One insider said: “Quite understandably a cautious approach being taken by the medical team.”

The Queen had been due to arrive in Belfast on Wednesday for a series of community engagements before she cancelled last minute.

It would have been her first trip to Northern Ireland in five years, as she last visited in 2016 with her late husband Prince Philip.

The trip was cancelled on such short notice palace staff were already waiting in Belfast, it was reported.

The monarch was due to attend a church service marking the centenary of Northern Ireland.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Palace said: “The Queen has reluctantly accepted medical advice to rest for the next few days.

“Her Majesty is in good spirits and is disappointed that she will no longer be able to visit Northern Ireland, where she had been due to undertake a series of engagements today and tomorrow.

“The Queen sends her warmest good wishes to the people of Northern Ireland, and looks forward to visiting in the future.”
