Newcastle United: What will the takeover mean?

Ian Rush believes Newcastle United’s new owners should look to appoint a “foreign manager” such as Zinedine Zidane or Roberto Mancini if they choose to sack Steve Bruce.

But the legendary former striker, who spent a brief spell with the Magpies, insists Bruce “deserves a chance” before the Saudi-backed consortium makes a change in the dugout.

Mirror Sport understands Bruce’s days at St James’ Park are numbered and he is expected to be dismissed imminently.

But the 60-year-old has led Newcastle to Premier League survival in the last two seasons and Rush insists the club should not take his achievements for granted.

Steve Bruce’s Newcastle tenure is set to end early in his third season as manager

“I think Steve Bruce has done a great job,” Rush told Mirror Football on behalf of Gambling.com. “I think he deserves a chance to stay there.

“You have to be realistic – Newcastle can still get relegated. Steve Bruce, if he’s still in charge, he will keep them up definitely, and he deserves a chance.”

Newcastle are still waiting for their first top-flight victory this season having drawn three and lost four of their games.

Rush concedes Bruce’s situation is a precarious one and he highlighted Zidane or Mancini as potential candidates to succeed him on Tyneside.

Zidane is out of work having left Real Madrid at the end of last season, while Mancini led Italy to Euro 2020 glory this summer and is contracted with the Azzurri until 2026.

Rush added: “If he (Bruce) doesn’t get a chance, who are you looking at? If you’re looking at the size of Newcastle, the wealth that they’ve got, you’d be looking at someone like Zinedine Zidane or Roberto Mancini, who could do fantastically.

“I think you’d be looking at a foreign manager. But I think Steve Bruce definitely deserves a chance to see what he can do.”

Rush scored two goals in 14 appearances for Newcastle during the twilight of his career and he is delighted the club’s fans have something to cheer about after Mike Ashley’s deeply unpopular spell as owner.

“I’m really, really pleased for them because I played for Newcastle for a year, I know what the supporters are like,” said the Liverpool and Wales icon.

“They’re absolutely fantastic, even though they haven’t been successful, to sell out every home game. I think it’s what they deserve.

“It might not happen overnight, you’ve got to be realistic, but it’s great for the city, great for the fans. They deserve it.”

Amid the uncertainty over Bruce’s future, assistant coach Graeme Jones is reportedly set to take charge of Newcastle’s clash with Tottenham on Sunday – the club’s first game since their £305million takeover.
