Squid Game ending: Director explains why Seong Gi-Hun dyed his hair red

Netflix’s Squid Game is on track to be the platform’s most-watched show ever, with millions of viewers hooked on the twists and turns in the incredibly gory survival drama

The director explained the main character’s new look

It’s one of Netflix’s goriest show – a hellish game show concept that has become one of the most-watched series.

Men and women in retro green tracksuits compete in childhood games such as What’s The Time Mr Wolf in a bid to win a huge cash show prize.

The earlier episodes of Squid Game see landscapes littered with corpses as hundreds of competitors are wiped out in brutal endings.

Fuelled by word of mouth – the brutal nine-part South Korean thriller has captivated audiences worldwide.

It’s little surprise that social media is filled with theories about what actually happens – with fans speculating that there the ending was actually revealed in episode three.

As grim as the games were, as jarring as the deaths were, nothing was quite as surprising as Seong Gi-Hun’s final appearance.

In the hairdressers, the popular main character opted to have his glossy black locks dyed red.

It’s fair to say, lots of viewers were confused by this decision, with one tweeting: “Finished Squid Game.

“Not sure how I feel about the ending. Also super confused why the main character decided to dye his hair red at the end.”

Another wrote: “Okay I finished Squid Game so I’m asking what we all need to know: Why. Did. He. Dye. His. Hair. That was an even bigger crime than when *** and **** **** *******.”

A third added: “Anyways, why did the man in Squid Game have to dye his hair red in the end????? That was confusing and a very odd decision.”

In an interview with Zapzee, Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk explains that his new look is a reflection of the character’s inner rage.

“I thought about this intuitively,” the director said, “thinking about how Gi Hun should change his hair in a hair salon. I imagined being him and thought to myself, ‘what is the colour that you would never choose to dye your hair?’

“Then I came to the conclusion that Gi Hun would never dye his hair red. It would be the craziest thing for him to do. So I chose the colour and I thought it really showed his inner anger.”
