Tsunami in South Pacific after volcanic eruption in Tonga

We’ll be bringing you the very latest updates, pictures and video on this breaking news story.

A tsunami with waves two feet high have hit American Samoa in the South Pacific and a warning has been issued in Tonga after an undersea volcano erupted.

The tsunami was observed by sea-level gauges at the capital of the US territory of American Samoa following volcanic activity in Tonga, the US-based Pacific tsunami warning center said.

The tsunami threat continues and sea level fluctuations and strong ocean currents pose hazards along beaches in harbours, the tsunami monitor said in a statement.

Tonga has also issued a tsunami warning after the undersea volcano erupted.

Video posted to social media showed large waves washing ashore in coastal areas.

Tonga Meteorological Services said a tsunami warning had been put in force for all of Tonga.

The eruption was the latest eruption to hit the region from the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcano.
